Can you believe that Spring is on it’s way! What exactly does that mean? It is time to cleanse. That’s right, the Spring season is a good time to refresh, replenish and reset your body with an enriching period of fasting or cleansing. Why do you want to cleanse or try fasting? Because it is super good for you!
Cleansing and fasting have been practised for thousands of years. Across many different cultures. Periods of fasting and cleansing have been practised as a means to refresh, replenish and reset the body and soul. Even modern medicine requires us to fast before certain tests and procedures.
The Obesity Code
According to Dr Jason Fung, MD the author of The Obesity Code. “Almost one-third of the population of the entire world is supposed to routinely fast throughout their entire lives. There is no question it can be done”. He goes on to say in his book and then support with scientific research, done on humans, “It appears to have extraordinary health benefits.” Check out his book on Amazon here.
Now is the time to put away your negative ideas about cleansing. Let go of the myths that fasting is bad for you. Inform your doctor of your interest in trying a 5-10 day cleanse and let’s go!
I am going to walk you through the cleansing process and a share a few of my experiences. I know you can do this! If you have never tried a cleanse or a bit of fasting before, here is your moment. Just do it and reset your body with fasting or cleansing!
Think about what type of cleanse or fast you want to do. Is there something specific you want to change about your health? Is there a specific goal in mind like an upcoming event? Do you have health, dietary or other restrictions to consider? How will your cleanse affect the rest of your family or could everyone cleanse together? Will this involve your faith or religious traditions.
Deciding which cleanse works best for you is the first step. Knowing why you are doing your cleanse will help motivate you.
Schedule your cleanse or fast appropriately. A realistic timeline is vital to your completing the cleanse successfully. This process will be challenging, especially if you have never tried a cleanse or fast before. You do not want to try cleansing during your college entrance exams, your sister’s wedding or a family holiday celebration. Unless, of course, the holiday is a fasting experience then yay, fast together as a family.
Selecting the right timing is key however, do not let your busy schedule get in the way of you actually doing your cleanse or fast. There will be sacrifices. You may have to exercise some serious restraint during this time. Just go for it. Every time I power through a cleanse and deny myself normal indulgences. I come out of the experience feeling stronger, more centered andwith a astonishingly clearer mind. Character building is one of the awesome side effects of cleansing. We grow in the process, no pun intended. 🙂
Shop, order and prepare the necessary ingredients for your cleanse. You may have decided to try a juice cleanse. If so, make sure you have at least a two day supply so you can continue your cleanse seamlessly. Trust me, you do not want to find yourself without your next juice. You will be hungry and without it to satisfy you, you will eat whatever food is nearby.
If you have salads or particular meals to prepare do this ahead of time. At least have the ingredients ready so you can toss it together and eat. Having to race out to the grocery store or market during your cleanse is not safe. In my experience it can be extremely difficult to restrain yourself with all the different foods around.
Relax. This is a key step. Being prepared is everything in a cleanse. If your experience is anything like mine you will be fighting demons. You will be talking yourself off the “eat something” ledge constantly. But when you realize after five, six, seven days that you haven’t consumed a single morsel of food. Nirvana, you feel like an absolute Superhero!
Cleansing is a time for resting and recovering the body. It is not the right time to run a marathon or paint the exterior of your house. When you are cleansing or fasting you want to eliminate the extra activities and use the time to reflect. You may want to adjust your workout to a more gentle exercise like walking or yoga. You might find that you feel like napping or that you are falling asleep earlier at night. Great, go with the resting. It is your body telling you it wants to heal and restore.
Detoxify by drinking lots and lots of water. Help your body eliminate the toxins it is releasing by soaking in a warm epsom salt bath. Sit in the dry sauna at your gym. Attend a gentle hot yoga class to help you sweat more toxins out. Schedule a therapeutic massage or lymphatic treatment at a spa. Treat yourself special during your cleansing time. This will help to make the process more enjoyable and maybe even something you begin to look forward to experiencing each year.
Difference Between Cleansing & Fasting
Now that you have some idea of what to expect during your cleanse or fast, let’s learn the basic differences between cleansing and fasting.
According to Linda Page, ND, PhD, a naturopathic doctor, lecturer, and author of the book Detoxification. Cleansing or detoxification is a way to recharge, rejuvenate, and renew, says Page. “Anybody can benefit from acleansing. The body is coming out of what might be called hibernation. It’s a way you can jump-start your body for a more active life, a healthier life.”
Cleansing or detoxification is typically done with food orjuice. Fasting on the other hand is restricted or no food consumption at all. Here is the fasting definition according to Wikipedia; Fasting is the willing abstinence from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. An absolute fast or dry fasting is normally defined as abstinence from all food and liquid for a defined period. Water fasting refers to abstinence from all food and drink except water, but black coffee and tea may be consumed. Hmmm, I can still drink coffee? Very very interesting…
Fear Of Cleansing
Sound scary? Do you feel that this will deny your body of vital nutrients? Do you think it is impossible to live without eating for a few days? Fear not. As I have already mentioned fasting and cleansing has been taking place for thousands of years. New research findings indicate several health benefits from allowing the body to rest from it’s nonstop digestive functions. It is even a natural response when we get sick. Consider the last time you were sick with the flu. Probably the last thing you wanted to do was eat.
Again, from Dr Yung, “Fasting seems to be a universal human response to multiple forms of illness and is ingrained in human heritage, as sold as mankind itself. Fasting is, in a sense, an instinct”.
